Chempedak is a fruit tree of the mulberry family, a close relative of breadfruit and jackfruit. The Malay name is chempedak or cempedak, pronounced like "champeda".
This plant comes from Malaya, where it is found at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level. Grown in Malaysia (especially in the states of Kedah and Perak), Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia.
It is easy to distinguish champedak from jackfruit by its long, hard brown hairs on young shoots, leaves and pedicels (calorizer). Fruits - on thick stalks, like a jackfruit; hang directly from the trunk or from thick branches. They are elongated, about 25-45 cm long and 15 cm wide, yellow-brown when mature; outwardly similar to jackfruit fruits, but emit a very strong, pleasant aroma.
The pulp of ripe Champedaca fruits is dark yellow, tender, juicy and sweet; in wild plants, however, it is sour and odorless. The fruit tastes like jackfruit with a durian flavor, and sometimes a sweet dough. In different countries with a tropical climate, the flavor shades of this fruit are different. It is believed that in Malaysia it has a light mushroom flavor.
Its rind is slightly sticky due to the latex content in it. The fruit ripens in 94-105 days. Champedak bears fruit mainly from June to August.
The ripe fruit is very easy to open with your hands - it seems to be torn apart. The inner part, like the jackfruit, consists of many orange slices, which contain round stones. Moreover, not only these slices are considered edible, but also other components of the champion - in particular, the strips that surround the slices.
